Automotive Fasteners - A Number of Items Included on the List

Some people think that automotive fasteners are only useful in automotive industries because of its name. However, such items are also depended upon by aerospace, petrochemical, waste processing, pharmaceutical and even machine industries. Typically, a fastener is derived from materials most specifically metals like iron, aluminum, brass, nickel and stainless steel.

Automotive fasteners are defined as mechanical components in order to hold two or more structures together. They are classified further as nuts, screw, rivets, studs, pins and tie rods. Each of these classifications has its own distinct characteristics. More facts on some of these types of fasteners are discussed in detail through the succeeding paragraphs.

Automotive nuts

Nuts are examples of fasteners used in order to secure a bolt or screw to a certain surface. Depending on the application where it is to be utilized, the nut is classified. Some examples of nuts are also classified depending on its shape and design. In this regard, subcategories include hex nuts, wing nuts, cap nuts and t-nuts. Lug nuts, plate nuts, jam nuts and self-locking nuts are also popular in a lot of automotive industries.

Automotive bolts

These are generally classified as threaded automotive fasteners with threaded pins or rods. Typically, it is easy to detect a bolt because it contains a head on one of its end. Bolts are offered in the market in different sizes and may only be placed depending on the hole's size where it is to be used. The most common types of automotive bolts are wheel bolts, U-bolts, mounting plate bolts and hub bolts. Rod bolts, lug bolts and radiator bolts are also included in the list.

Automotive washers

Just by hearing the term washer, one may not be able to comprehend well about why it is classified under the list of auto fasteners. Well, automotive washers are those that have small and flat dishes containing holes on its center and are used to hold a load of automotive bolts. It is often found below the nut or the joint in order to prevent leakage as well as distribute pressure. Common examples of automotive washers are bolt lock, hardened, cylinder head, lug nut and radiator washers.

Other types of fasteners

Aside from the three types elaborated above, there are yet other forms of fasteners offered in the market. Studs, for instance are those that have double-ended features and are fastened at both ends. These fasteners are classified according to where they are used and the material utilized to make up such industrial products. Other automotive fasteners are rivets, screws and tie rods.

A Look at Deck Fasteners

Deck fasteners are screws especially manufactured to fasten the many soft, thin planks of a wood en deck in place. Wooden decks must be able to withstand many different kinds of weather and corrosion, and so deck fasteners must be able to stand up to these elements just as well. Therefore, deck fasteners are usually coated with a weather-resistant coating that protects them from rust and corrosion. The coating is made of zinc plating. A steel screw plated with zinc is called a galvanized steel screw. A screw can also be coated in a ceramic material. Deck screws can also be made of stainless steel or high-copper-content screws, as these screws won't stain the deck.

Deck fasteners are designed to drill their own hole, drive downward gradually and easily, lay flat against the surface of the deck, and be difficult to extract once inserted. For this reason, deck screws are said to be sharp-pointed, self-drilling, self-countersinking, and shallow-threaded. Sharp points eliminate the need for extra drills. The threads of a deck screw are sharp as well. The top of the shank, up at the collar by the head, flares upward, so that it sets perfectly level with the deck. The threads of the screw are set at a very gradual or shallow degree, so that the screw goes in easier. Some deck screws are even lubricated, for even greater ease of insertion.

The heads usually have a square-shaped insertion point for a square-headed screwdriver or screw gun. Square heads don't accidentally strip as easily as Phillips-head screwdrivers.

Hidden Deck Fasteners

Hidden deck fasteners or "blind" deck fasteners eliminate screws from view entirely. Rather than drilling into the surface of the deck and into the under-support, the thin planks fit together like a simple jigsaw puzzle using a series of brackets. These brackets are attached to the side faces of the planks using screws. You screw the first or edge plank normally, and then you fit the second planks into it via a slot. Follow this series until you get to the end of the deck. Fasten the last plank in place normally, and voila! You have a new deck with no visible screws. The deck holds together as if it were one piece of wood.

Metal Fasteners: An Overview

Metric fasteners are fasteners that are manufactured and labeled according to a worldwide standard of measurement. That worldwide standard is set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. That worldwide standard is based on the metric system.

There are many ways in which fasteners can be measured and manufactured for size. It is important that there be some kind of standard for screws, with the countless number of products and equipment that rely on screws to stay fast together. The United Kingdom, United States, and Canada invented as faster measurement system in 1949 called the Unified Thread Standard. They hoped it would become the worldwide standard. But the ISO standards eventually won out. The UK no longer uses that standard at all, and Canada is currently midway through the transition to the ISO metric fastener standard. Today, 40% of screws and products made in the United States are made with metric faster systems. Gradually, metric fasteners are replacing UTS fasteners. Soon, UTS will be extinct.

Metric fasteners are measured in millimeters by their thread diameter from edge to edge, and not by the shank portion of the screw. The capital letter "M" will precede the number of millimeters wide the thread is. For example, a metric fastener can be 5 millimeters wide, and it will be denoted as M5. A thread 6 millimeters wide is denoted as M6.

Metric fasteners used to come with two levels of thread thickness: fine and coarse. Neither one was better or worse than the other, but they are not compatible. So the ISO decided on fine-threaded screws as the standard. Today, most new products are made with fine threads in mind, but you can still get coarse threads, since some older products that use coarse threads still need to be repaired from time to time.

Powers Fasteners

Power fasteners are those that are specially designed to withstand extreme conditions and are made to rigid quality standards in order to perform a more efficient job of fastening. These fasteners are useful where other types of fasteners do not measure up for the job at hand.

These fasteners are made of special materials such as hardened stainless steel and sometimes the fastener is electroplated with an anti corrosive metal or element such as zinc or titanium. Power fasteners are usually used in industries and in construction work where normal fasteners do not provide efficiency and dependability.

These are also heat resistant making them ideal for industries that have processes, which require the fasteners to bear tremendous amount of heat. Steel and iron industries are some of the examples where power fasteners are used so that they do not disintegrate because of the heat.

Titanium fasteners are also power fasteners because titanium is stronger than steel and much lighter. These fasteners are used in surgical procedures for a variety of purposes because they are non-corrosive and do not react with blood or any body tissue when implanted in the human body. Titanium fasteners are also used in the airline industry because of their lightweight and durability. Grand prix race car wheels are also fixed with titanium fasteners to reduce weight and to increase performance and efficiency of that car.

Power fasteners provide solutions for those purposes where normal fasteners are either useless or dangerous to use lest they should fail and cause an accident.
